By Stella Gay

The origin of the poodle breed of dog is Germany according to most historians. However, it became a breed of its own in France. Its development was for the specific purpose of hunting waterfowl, but today, it is being used for several other purposes. One seeing a poodle today would mistake it as a soft dog meant for ornamental purposes, but that is not true. It is a hardy dog with ability of doing several hard tasks.

The breed was achieved by crossing various breeds of water dogs from Spain, Russia, France, Germany, Hungary, and Portuguese. Northern Africa has also been associated with its origin by some historians. The breed has become very popular in the modern society, making it worthwhile to have some information about it before making a purchase. This writing puts together important facts about it that someone should know before considering poodles for sale.

Size is of utmost significance whenever making a purchase because it influences how much space needs to be preserved, care requirements, and food consumption. Generally, the three major sizes are standard, miniature, and toy. Although size varies, the breed remains similar. Additionally, a slight size variation exists between males and females.

The weight category for the toy-sized animals is between 6 and 9 pounds, while for miniatures is between 15 to 17 pounds and lastly for the standard size is between 45 to 70 pounds. The weight among the standard-sized dogs is variable between females and males with the latter weighing slightly higher. The color of the coat is another variable that provides a source of preference among buyers. The coats would be silver, cream, apricot, brown, white, black, gray, or a combination of colors.

Unlike many other species of dogs that shade their coat occasionally, poodles stay with theirs forever. This presents a good feature against allergies. Ways for manipulating the hair include shaving, trimming, grooming, and clipping because of its curly, wiry, and dense nature. The styles one can manipulate into the hair for canines used in competitions are regulated by the organization in charge of the competitions.

Before setting out to buy a poodle, there is the issue of maintenance that one should think of first. The breed is high-maintenance and will need to be groomed every 3 to 6 weeks. Sometimes the grooming may be required more often to maintain the coat in good state. However, grooming cost should not be discouraging because an easier option of shaving the coat off also exists.

As mention previously, poodles can live in just about any type of home due to its hardy nature. Estates and apartments are some of the examples of places they can live. The only major requirements are regular exercise and a lot of company from the owner. Indoor living conditions are preferred more by miniatures and toys. They have the ability to learn fast and they are easy to train too.

Owners should be careful not to accidentally teach bad habits to the dog because that can happen quite easily. Seeking the services of professional trainer or seeking advice on how to go about with the training is a good idea. Be warned that skipping training will lead to a badly behaved dog.
