Alcohol Abuse and Ways to Completely Stop It

Many people who abuse alcohol know the reasons why they have to stop drinking, but the how continues to puzzle even this most diligent person amongst us. Maybe you've made a huge legal mess or you've lost another job. Its either you were dumped by your spouse or abandoned by your family because of how you have been acting. All reasons why you have to look at your drinking and seriously think about stopping.



Alcoholics normally know that they have to quit the bad habit. Many 'normal' individuals don't just wake up and say, "I think I should give up drinking." Numerous individuals who drink a lot know deep down inside that they have a problem.

Wouldn't it be great if there were a Magic Pill that made you stop drinking? Or perhaps a hypnotist to 'reprogram' your need for liquor. Wouldn't a time machine be great, go back in time before you had a problem and refrain from that first drink?

But the fact remains that it is a lengthy and hard process. First, you need to learn how to live your life with no alcohol. For some, it's going to be painful; alcohol cravings can be long. Hence being equipped with coping tools and methods is vital for long term success. Heavy drinkers need help during withdrawal and detox. So before quitting, ask for a physician's advice. For some people, the pain and discomfort is minimal. Lots of alcoholics have tried to give up once or twice in their lives. But the physical cravings can last for years. You will not succeed if you do not learn to live a life without alcohol. For every one thousand alcoholics, only one stays sober for at least 2 years. The odds are dismal but there is a way to be that 1.

People usually do well if they follow a methodical process to quit drinking liquor.

If you admit that you should quit drinking alcohol then you are in the right path.

Jot down all of the reasons that you think you must quit drinking alcohol. Jot down every reason you could think of. Be sure and include those you hurt, how embarrassed you are, and any damage you have done. Put this paper in a secure place so that you can read it when you need to expel any doubt that your need to give up drinking liquor.

It could also help if you think about the money you spend every time you drink liquor - buying it, going to clubs, the legal fees and salary loss. Do the math when you check your credit card statements and budget. Try to figure out how much alcohol is costing you not only mentally, physically, relationally but financially.

Honesty is essential in order to succeed and completely recover from alcohol abuse. You will know when it is the right time to give up.

Make a Doctor's Appointment

Your medical doctor will assess the damage you've done to your body. Your medical doctor can also assess how you should stop drinking. Its either doing it by yourself or going to a hospital with medical supervision.

Tell People (that understand)

Another great method to quit drinking is to tell trusted people that would understand that you are going to give up drinking and you might need their help. Most people are flattered and will be there to support and help you through the difficult times.

Find Meetings

12 Step Meetings is a great place to meet others who have gone through the same thing you're going through. Searching for 12 Step meetings in your neighborhood would get you started. Different meetings draw different individuals. Attend a lot of meetings all around your neighborhood; in fact, you should attend ninety meetings in 90 days. In these meetings, you will be given important info on quitting.
