The Benefits Of Having A Freelance Construction Estimator

By Jocelyn Davidson

Sometimes being with a company, working with a boss, and being with a team, can be trying to your artistic mind. It makes one feel restrained and boxed to a regulated idea of what is right or good for his work. If you are the type who wants a free reign on your ideas and designs, you might want to try freelancing.

If you have a contractor or a builder, they normally include the estimate with the bid for the job. However, there are instances wherein you would need professionals from different company to work together on the construction. Getting a freelance construction estimator may be a good decision for you, long as you know what to look for and expect from one.

Now you might wonder why they are considered more affordable than estimators who are affiliated with a company. Well, they do not belong to a company, so they do not have anyone to answer to. Most organization decides on how much their estimators get, and add to that how much they get, so you get a different rate. If they are going solo, they get to decide how much they are worth.

Be flexible. You are expected to cooperate people who are not your office mates or co workers. You will meet on the site, and most probably meeting would end just there. But still you have to make sure that you can work smoothly with them to avoid issues with the person who hired you.

Check their availability. They may be stuck with a job right now and cannot report to you soon. If they have work, that is a good sign that they can be trusted. However, if they cannot accommodate you at the time you need them, then it defeats the whole purpose of getting a freelancer. This can also cause delay and may clash with your project in the future.

They are at most available. Even with other work at hand, you can be assured they would be there. Your contact would be them directly. You do not have to go through secretaries and other people to get your questions answered.

Embrace independence. Your own time, your own terms sounds good, but never be too overwhelmed by your freedom. You have to make sure that your independence and creativity hinder communication between you and the person who hired you. You supply them with the knowledge and skills, but also be open to their suggestions.

Set your expectations. It would be best if you tell your estimator on the get go what you expect from them you have to be honest with them, particularly about budget, so they can also make adjustments on their own without compromising the whole plan. Be clear as to your goals, and never be afraid to ask questions and to clarify things.

Of course there are times within the construction that you and your construction estimator might have different sides, but that is just normal. The beauty is that it is just between the two of you. He supplies the professional and expert part, you supply comments and possible points for improvements. It is a beautiful work in progress.
