Stain Removal: How To Preserve Your Carpeting

By Suzanne Herrman

Clean, fresh carpeting definitely makes your home look wonderful, but its look is diminished when it becomes stained. The key to stain removal is to act quickly, and while some stains come up easily, others can be very difficult to remove. Here are some helpful tips if you have to remove a particularly pesky carpet stain.

In general, your first step with any carpet stain should be to gently blot up the liquid with a clean white cloth or perhaps some paper towels. Many stains can then be rinsed with cold water and gently dried and that's also you need to do. One important note is that you should never rub or scrub the stained area as this damages the fibers of your carpet and can push the stain beneath the carpet surface and into the carpet pad.

Red wine stains are definitely one of the more common stains, and homeowners tend to clutch at the site of their beautiful carpeting tinged with crimson liquid. However, all is not lost. Begin as you would with almost any other stain and gently dab up the liquid. Once the spot is dry, rinse it with cool water or perhaps cool club soda. Some people also have found that white wine can remove the color of the red wine stain, and then you just rinse the carpet and gently dry up the fibers.

If you spill wax from a candle on your carpet, you are not alone, as this is a surprisingly common type of stain. Removal of wax is a multi-step process, but don't panic, it can be removed. Find a completely waterproof bag and load it up with ice. Place the ice bag on top of the wax and when the wax has frozen, use a dull knife to very gently scrape away the wax. For whatever is left over, you now will apply heat. Take clean paper towels or a brown lunch bag (without any writing) and place it on the wax. Set your iron to a warm, but not hot setting and rub it over the paper towel or bag. As it heats, the wax will affix to the bag and you can simply lift it off. If colorant remains behind, treat it with mild soapy water or perhaps a chemical spot treatment.

If you have a dog, you've probably had a urine stain on your carpeting at least once. This common stain does require some work to remove, but if you fail to remove the urine thoroughly, not only is this a bit unsanitary, the dog can smell the traces of urine and is more likely to return to that spot to urinate in the future. Begin by soaking up the urine with clean paper towels and then create what is known as poultice. Take about five paper towels and dampen them and then lay them over the stain. Weight these paper towels down with something heavy and allow it to rest for 10 minutes. Then treat the area with urine cleaner that removes all traces of the urine and the scent. Reapply the poultice overnight and by morning the stain should be gone.

If you are truly nervous about handling a bad stain, consider calling in the experts. Your Prairieville carpet cleaners, Baton Rouge carpet cleaners or a Denham Springs carpet cleaning service probably can help with just about any stain or offer you some sound advice. In addition to getting rid of stains, professional carpet cleaners also remove all the dirt, dust mites, fungi, mold and other toxic elements from your carpet every time they clean. It is recommended that you schedule service every six months to keep your carpet as fresh as possible.
